BATES CONSERVATION EASEMENT

Bates-easement.png

This 9 acres conservation easement was donated by Susan Bates in 2015. Located on the east side of Tanner Hill Road, it is only a few hundred yards from Lake Waramaug. It is also directly across Tanner Hill Road from the WLT’s Brush easements, and thus is an important addition to the matrix of protected open space in this otherwise relatively highly developed area.

The Bates easement is part of a larger hemlock/hardwood woodland which provides habitat for a variety of birds and other wildlife. Protection of this wooded easement helps preserve the viewshed along Tanner Hill Road which is visible from the scenic roads that encircle Lake Waramaug. The easement also provides a wooded buffer on a steep slope that drains into Lake Waramaug Brook and Lake Waramaug. Protection of this easement helps reduce the flow of non-point pollution into the lake.
