COORDS PRESERVE
The Coords Preserve was donated to the Warren Land Trust in 2005 by Priscilla Coords – Warren’s Town Treasurer from 1969 to 1981 - and her children. Of her gift, Mrs. Coords said, “We love this town. We moved here in 1949 and have wonderful memories of our life in the country. Our donation is our thank you to the people of Warren.” The Coords Preserve has several interesting natural and historical features. There are two beaver ponds, a wild grape arbor, and cellar holes and stone walls indicate the location ofseveral late 18th and 19th-century home-sites that once lined City Hill Road.
The Hiking Trail
The trail is currently flooded due to a beaver dam 1/3 mile in from Angevine Road, making it impassible with no viable work-around. We are working on creating a detour. To access the far side of the trail, please use the Wyantenock State Forest parking area on Rt. 341.
The Coords trail, located off of Angevine Road, was once City Hill Road and was abandoned by the town in 1905. The trail is a pleasant and easy straight out and back. Along the trail, wildflowers such as lady’s slipper and star-flower, and Redwing blackbirds and Kingbirds can be sighted. Parking is along the road near the trailhead.
The Coords trail also allows hikers to gain access to the Wyantenock State Forest and the blue-blazed Mattatuck Trail. The Coords connection to the northern section of the Mattatuck Trail will take you to the Mohawk State Forest in Cornwall, one of the most scenic woodland areas in Connecticut, offering outstanding panoramic views of western Connecticut and the hills of New York. See www.ctwoodlands.org/blue-blazed-hiking-trails for more information about the Mattatuck trail.
